All spoilers pertaining to the original timeline of the series (Soul Edge to she get to appear in Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate, she returned in Soulcalibur: Lost Swords. of Pyrrha ending up Ret Gone'd in the rebooted timeline should Sophitia go .. as her surrogate younger brother; the Chain of Souls relationship chart in IV. Hephaestus then supplied her with holy metal, which Rothion used to forge a new Omega Sword and shield; she set out on a second journey to destroy the cursed sword. On this second journey Sophitia, who healed the lands polluted by evil, eventually stopped feeling the evil presence of the blade.
She continued for a while, but once she was sure someone else had destroyed the blade, she immediately ended her travels and returned to her home as quickly as possible. There, she soon married Rothion and eventually gave birth to both a son and a daughter, Patroklos and Pyrrha. But a strange metal shard that Rothion had received from a mysterious customer four years later brought a halt to her newfound happiness. Upon bringing the metal fragment home, their two children began to fight violently with each other over the artifact.
The evil aura the fragment emanated caused Sophitia's old wounds to ache, as they had been undoubtedly infected with the evil energy of Soul Edge seven years previous, explaining her children's predilection for the bizarre aura.
Cassandra had seen Sophitia's distraught expression and proceeded to grab the shard from her grasp and run out the door, running away from home soon afterwards with the Omega Sword and Nemea Shield.
A couple of weeks later, Sophitia decided that if she was to free her children from the evil sword's curse and ensure her sister's safety, she had to embark on a third journey. But because Cassandra had stolen Sophitia's previous weapons, which she had stored at Eurydice Shrine, Rothion forged her a new set to destroy the cursed Soul Edge once and for all.
Her journey took her to Ostrheinsburg Castlewhich was blanketed by a thick fog. From the fog emerged a small girl in green clothing with a large ring-like blade. The girl casually told Sophitia that Soul Edge was not in the castle, and she also told her that she wanted to "play" with Sophitia's children with a smile that was neither gentle nor heartwarming.
Sophitia lunged at the girl, but she easily dodged her attack, and disappeared into the fog, laughing. Sophitia quickly returned home and was relieved to see that her family was safe, but she was unsure whether to continue her search for Soul Edge.
She went to the Eurydice Shrine to pray to Hephaestus for guidance, where the girl in green was waiting for her. As they fought, Sophitia noticed an emotion from the girl other than madness.
She realized that the girl had never felt happiness and commented as such. With a look of hatred in her eyes, the irritated girl simply pushed Sophitia away and left, leaving these words in her wake: Seong Mi-na is often thought of as just being a female Moveset Clone of Kilik, the latter being the more recognizable character between them.
In fact, when people argue cleaning out the roster of clones, they'll cite Mi-na as the biggest example. The thing is, Seong Mi-na predates Kilik by having appeared in the original game, Soul Edge, whereas Kilik didn't appear until Soulcalibur the name that the rest of the series is based off of due to Sequel Displacement.

While this could be considered Older Than They Thinkit's so ubiquitous that it deserves mention here. A new one will likely arise in the wake of VI: Mi-na is a clone of Kilik at all. Considering that Divergent Character Evolution has made them play little like each other apart from their weapons, it's not even fair to call her a clone anymore, not that it'll stop people from doing it. Actually, this combination didn't happen until much later. Siegfried-as-Nightmare lasted all of two games Soulcalibur and IIwhere afterwards the two were made separate characters on the roster due to Siegfried breaking free from Soul Edge and then Zasalamel bonding Inferno and Soul Edge's memories as Siegfried into a discarded suit of armor.
It wasn't until III where this was introduced, which was done on purpose to make them stand out from each otherand was maintained in future games. While having Siegfried wield Soul Edge with one hand would indeed happen, this wasn't introduced until 's Soulcalibur VI — a little more recently than one might think. Everyone "knows" that Soul Edge is the evil sword and Soul Calibur is the " good sword ", and imagine that the two are at war with each other because the former wants to reign chaos and the latter wants to prevent that from happening for the good of mankind.
Those who still think that would be very surprised that this can only be true if taken at face value. In reality, both swords are evilbut in different waysand are Not So Different from each other. Hinted at throughout the series, and first made explicit in IV, it wasn't until V did the fact come to light where Soul Calibur was shown to have its own version of Inferno with Elysium, and similarly would've taken over Patroklos as its host to create its version of Nightmare.
The overall theme is Both Order and Chaos Are Dangeroussince humanity is screwed no matter who wins. But at least I admit it. Same is said for Talim supposedly being voiced by Hynden Walch.
Due to her speed, combo-friendly nature, and high offensive potential, expect to see this girl a lot in online play. Sophitia occupied a similar spot in IV for the same reasons. Kilik seems to be a favorite of many casual fans; he's easy-to-use, has good reach, and is decently strong, if not somewhat linear in his attack patterns.
Opinions on the character roster vary even more wildly. To a lesser extent, the fourth game. Depending on who you askIV is either seen as a slight improvement from III the console version, at least with a refurbished Create-a-Soul feature or a much slower-paced, turtle-friendly game with a stripped-down CAS system.
The latter boils down to whether the player values the extra weapon styles of III over the extra customization items and skills system in IV. Not to mention there's a surprising amount of skin visible over there Does not even begin to describe Broken Destiny's quest mode, The Gauntlet.
Any semblance of seriousness is sent flying out the window by Cassandra's sword before being missiled by Hilde's spear. Patroklos, who despite his horrendous acts throughout the Soulcalibur V story, was forced upon the player as the new protagonist. Note that this only applies to the Odashima-led incarnation of Project Soul; the Project Soul headed up by Hoshino, and later Okubo, has a clear distaste for Patroklos in line with many fans of the series.
Soulcalibur V received generally favorable reviews, whereas fan reception was far more mixed. The rifts created in the fanbase over subjects most reviewers disregarded as trivial matters, perhaps now irreparable, ensured that SCV would sell poorly, falling short of its predecessor's sales by far.
One of the reasons V and the new direction it intended to take the series in failed, prompting the series to then go straight back to the old setting. It was meant to be a new and fresh start, with a new face that would lead the series forward. However, when that face, Patroklos Alexander, turned out to be the most hated character in the series for being a murderous, revenge-obsessed, arrogant, idiotic, unreasonable and unrepentant Jerkass who's also meant to replace the legitimately pure, virtuous and legitimately likable Sophitia his mother and one of the icons of the seriesit all falls apart from there.
Any character and story development was negated by the audience not caring about itand that was why the vast majority were happy when VI hit the reset button.
Death of the Author: Done selectively with V due to its sloppy handling of the plot. While many story ideas for the game were regarded as having good potential, a number of fans tend to pick and choose elements they like best in regards to their compatibility with where IV left off and outright ignore some of the more controversial narrative decisions by Daishi Odashima ex.

Soulcalibur VI appears to enforce this from another direction, not only disregarding the year jump by returning to the era of the first Soulcalibur but also seemingly rebooting the timeline in the manner of Mortal Kombat 9. Patroklos is what happens when you try to compress the totality of Siegfried's character progression in the past five titles into one abbreviated story, but ramp up every flaw of his to the point of anti-endearment.
Despite SCV trying its damnedest to make you accept him as the series' new hero, it is Pyrrha, his wallflower of a sister, who comes across as a more strong-willed and heroic character, and she's the one who spends most of the game doing Tira's biddingright up to becoming the newest wielder of Soul Edge.
Yes, the "villain" of the game is more of a hero than its supposed lead. When Patroklos is challenged on the legitimacy of his status as Soul Calibur's inheritor and told that he lacks resolve, one wonders why the sword simply didn't change hands to Z. Face it, if Yoshimitsu declares you an evildoer, he probably has a good reason to do so.
He does slowly move away from thisthough a downright horrific Establishing Character Moment at the end of his first chapter made it hard for many to recognize any subsequent growth as a character from Patroklos. Said character development being poorly paced really didn't help either. Die for Our Ship: Come V, Hilde having to die makes no sense, since she is a married woman with two children much like Sophitia, in factbut this has not stopped some.
With the exception of Rothion, this all seems to go in reverse, too. Whether or not the shipping wars are somewhat friendly or downright hostile depend upon the individual pairing in question.
Rothion's case has taken a more positive and hilarious turn thanks to V and VI. Basically, if Rothion had to die for the ship, the main reason would be to prevent Patroklos from coming to existence; therefore, Rothion dying is now retroactively considered a Heroic Sacrifice.
Taki was quite possibly the earliest example of this in the series, becoming its first Breakout Character and one of the most iconic female characters in the series rivaled only by Ivy. Her popularity is attributed to the fact that she's a mature kunoichi unlike most female ninja in fighting games, who tend to be teenagers, she's a grown womanher general badassery shown in the story, her fun-to-use playstyle, and Her likability amongst fans only continued to grow as Taki and her fellow female co-lead Sophitia became somewhat less integral to the plot in favor of characters like Siegfried, Xianghua, Kilik, and Hilde.
Naturally, quite a stir was caused when she was replaced by Natsu in V, and many welcomed her back when she was announced for Lost Swords, even if the game itself was less-than-stellar. In the popularity poll, she placed second out of all characters behind only Talim with votes. Inshe was the first character to get celebrated during the series 20th anniversary, despite the fact that she had been cut from the last game. With her chances of returning in a future game looking pretty good based on this, Project Soul eventually delivered what the fans wanted and properly brought back Taki for the next main installment to great fanfare.
After Sophitia missed out on V due to dying between gamesLost Swords sold itself near exclusively on the fact that she was once again a playable character. Her return in Soulcalibur VI due to a Continuity Reboot undoing her death in the previous game was also well-received. He was probably the reason many people got into Soul Edge, thanks to his unique weapon and flashy moves. His lack of presence in the other games makes this all the more sad.
Thankfully Maxi uses the same weapon — hey, wait After being replaced by the far less likable Yun-seongHwang saw a notable upswing in popularity, to the point that fans petitioned him to be included in V.
He unfortunately didn't make it, but he and Li Long did briefly return in III, even receiving expanded movesets alongside Amy in the game's Arcade Edition. His appearance as a side character in Seong Mi-na's story in VI and Yun-seong nowhere to be seen outside of a brief mention has generated much speculation and anticipationthat he becomes playable in future DLC.
Seong Mi-na—one of the original three Soul ladies, but the one with the least plot importance by far—was thrust here at some point after V. There was even a short-lived movement, Occupy: Fortunately, damage control was done with the announcement of Mi-na's inclusion in VI at EVOwhich received a roaring applause from the crowd. After her introduction in the original Calibur, Ivy quickly became a fixture of the series and ended up supplanting both Sophitia and Taki as the female face of the series — she was the only female character from any of the first three games to appear in V, was featured on the cover of every game in the series released between Calibur and V, and was marketed heavily in advertisements for both V and Lost Swords.
The fact that she has an interesting weapona mechanically complex and visually stunning playstyleand a tragic backstory on top of being one of the biggest sex symbols in video game history only further endears her to fans. Talim is also very popular due to her kind personality and unique playstyle.

Plot[ edit ] The story of Soulcalibur IV, told via in-game written profiles and movies, centers around the appearance of the ancient king Algol, his tower, and his connection to the origin of the spirit sword named Soulcalibur. Every character's motivation and relationship to the other characters is diagrammed in a mode called Chain of Souls. As usual, none of the individual endings from the previous game are considered canonical events, and most of the characters' motivations from that game remain unresolved.
However, a small number of characters did experience important events associated with universal Soulcalibur III events. Siegfried has died and been resurrected by the Soulcalibur sword.
